Station 6 – Way of the Cross

Here is the part from my DVD of the Via Dolorosa Experience that we walk from station number 5 to station number 6 where Jesus meets Veronica.

At station number 6 Jesus meets Veronica, a young girl which Jesus cured in the past.

Now, Jesus is already carrying his cross for almost 500 meters (1/3 a mile) and his face is cover with blood from the crown of thorns to his head and his eyes closed because of his sweat – a suffering beyond imagination.

Veronica sees Jesus’ suffering, rushes to him and wipes his face with her veil. Only then Jesus is able to open his eyes.

When Veronica looks at the cloth, she notices that the image of Jesus face is imprinted on it…

This is the first time in history that the image of Jesus is captured.

Folk etymology has attributed the name’s origin to the words ’vera’ (Latin for true) and ’icon’ (Greek for image) which means: Veronica = True Image

Today, at station 6 there is a chapel to commemorate Jesus and his image on Veronica’s veil.

Now Let’s All Live the Jerusalem Experience!

A Virtual Pilgrimage Jerusalem

Because Jerusalem is considered to be the holiest city in Christianity, it is the premier pilgrimage destination for Christians all over the world. There are sites in Jerusalem and the surrounding area that mark special points in the life of Jesus and visiting them is an overwhelming emotional experience that stays with the pilgrim forever. Just imagine that at each of these sites, Jesus has walked, preached and performed miracles; above all this is where he was crucified and resurrected, and eventually ascended to heaven.

Pilgrimage to Jerusalem

I enthusiastically recommend to anyone who can afford to do so to come and visit all the holy sites here in Jerusalem. Since I know that there are many who cannot afford this expensive journey, I have launched my Virtual Pilgrimage Jerusalem Video Site (as part of the Virtual Pilgrimage Holy Land) where I post videos of all the holy sites for Christians here in Jerusalem. Throughout my site, you can read comments from people all over the world who voted my site best online destination for Pilgrimage Jerusalem Christians and Pilgrimage Jerusalem Catholic.

I have organized my videos around major locations such as the Via Dolorosa, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, The Garden Tomb, the Mount of Olives, Mount Zion, the Temple Mount, the City of David and other sites in Jerusalem’s vicinity.

JerusalemExperience.com features variable content suited to various denominations – e.g. Catholic, Protestant, Evangelist, Orthodox, and more; in other words different denominations can find content matching their taste.

Jerusalem Pilgrimage Videos

Here is a sample video that describes the Via Dolorosa:

Jesus from Nazareth is the principal figure of Christianity in which he is believed to be the Son of God. All Scholars of ancient times, agree that Jesus was actually existed but not all of them agree about the historicity of gospel narratives and their theological assertions of his divinity. They are all agreeing that; Jesus was a Jewish Teacher from the Galilee who preached his gospel all over, during the regime of the Roman Empire in Israel and Judea; that he was baptized by John the Baptist and was crucified in Jerusalem after he was condemned to death by the Roman procurator of Judea, Pontus Pilate.

Jesus is described by many scholars in different portraits, which share a number of overlapping attributes such as the Messiah, a charismatic Healer, a philosopher, the leader of apocalyptic movement and a social reformer who preached for equal rights among all people.

In Christianity, Jesus is hold as the awaited Messiah as was described in the Old Testament, thus he is being referred as Jesus Christ.

The Life of Jesus and his acts are described by his followers, mainly by the four canonical gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which are part of what we call today day as the New Testament.

The Gospels narrative of the life of Jesus includes 5 major milestones which are:

- Jesus Baptism – The Gospels tells us about John the Baptist who used to baptize people in the Jordan River while he is preaching for penance and repentance. According to Matthew (3:14) when John met Jesus he stated “I need to be baptized by you” but Jesus urged John to baptize him nonetheless. When Jesus emerged from the Water, it is written that a voice from heaven stated “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased” and then the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus. This is the evident that Jesus was the Son of God.

- Transfiguration – In this event of the transfiguration, Jesus transfigured and became radiant in front of 3 of his apostles at the mountain (today believed to be Mount Tabor). At that same time the voice of God is stating again that Jesus is the Son of God – “This is my beloved Son” (as it was heard during the baptism). But this time, the voice of God also stated – that Jesus is the messenger of God – “Listen to him”.

- Crucifixion – Jesus crucifixion is described in all four canonical gospels and is regarded as an historical event. Jesus is being crucified on a cross together with 2 thieves at Golgotha (also called Calvary) after he carried his cross along the Via Dolorosa. By dying on the cross, Jesus redeemed our sins.

- Resurrection – the gospel recounts that the first day of the week after the crucifixion of Jesus, typically interpreted as Sunday, the tomb of Jesus was found to be empty by his followers. Mark (16:9) and John (20:15) indicate that Jesus appeared to the Magdalene (Mary Magdalene) first. The Resurrection of Jesus is considered the proof that Jesus was the son of God. Many Christians believe that the site of the crucifixion and then the resurrection of Jesus is where it is today the Church of the Holy Sepulchre here in Jerusalem. Others believe that the site of the Crucifixion and resurrection is where it is today the Garden tomb.

- Ascension – after Jesus resurrection, the gospel count several post resurrection appearance of Jesus to his followers. The final post resurrection appearance is 40 days after Jesus resurrection when Jesus ascended to Heaven on top of Mount of Olives as it is described by Luke (24:51). Today, the site of Jesus ascension into heaven is marked by the Chapel of the Ascension on top of Mount of Olives here in Jerusalem.

When we explore the gospels for Jesus teaching, we can categorize Jesus’ work into 3 sections:

- Ministry – this is the preaching of Jesus. According to Luke (3:23) Jesus was “about 30 years of age” at the start of his ministry. Jesus’ Ministry begins with this Baptism by John the Baptist and end at the last supper with Jesus’ disciples in Jerusalem. Jesus started his ministry around the Sea of Galilee and then encourage by his first disciples, Jesus began traveling and preaching all over Isarel. The final ministry of Jesus takes place in Jerusalem and sometimes it is called the Passion Week. This period began with Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

- Parables – the Parables represent a major component of the teachings of Jesus in the gospels, forming approximately one third of his recorded teachings, and John (14:10) positions them as the revelations of God the Father. Jesus’ parables are seemingly simple and memorable stories, often with imagery, and each conveys a message. Scholars have commented that although these parables seem simple, the messages they convey are deep, and central to the teachings of Jesus

- Miracles – The miracles of Jesus are the supernatural deeds of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospels, in the course of his ministry. According to the Gospel of John, only some of these were recorded. John (21:25) states that “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, …even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

I welcome you to explore this website and to experience the places where Jesus lived, conducted his ministry and his miracles, and eventually return to heaven to be with his father.

It is prophesized in the Book of Revelation that this great city will appear as it descends from heaven and replace the Jerusalem that is currently in existence. Some believe that this prophesy means the restoration of currently standing Jerusalem. The Prophet Ezekiel had a vision of New Jerusalem and prophesized that it would be built south of the Temple Mount which is in the Old City of Jerusalem. According to Ezekiel’s prophesy, New Jerusalem will be the dwelling place of the twelve tribes of Israel. This prophesy is supposed to be fulfilled in the year 3372, going by the Hebrew calendar and take place on Yom Kippur.

People of faith throughout generations have held Jerusalem to be a very special place. Many people hope that they will one day be able to visit the city of Jerusalem. They have a good cause for this hope as this beautiful and spiritually important city is filled with holy places that are a blessing to the tourists who visit this Holy Land. Some people make it a point to visit Jerusalem at least once a year. This journey is a vital part of their spiritual life. The city of Jerusalem is an important location for many denominations. Both Judaism and Christianity have their roots here and have contributed to the History of Jerusalem.

There is nothing like the awesome Jerusalem Experience. People who go there get the opportunity to feel closer to God than they ever have before. There is no place else in the world where so many praying people can be found. Believers of Judaism and Christianity alike believe that the land has been blessed and that prayers performed there are very powerful. Once they get into the city they do not want to waste even one precious moment. For Christians, it is a special experience to see the places that Jesus Christ visited. It is as if they can travel back in time and be with Him as he went about His ministry. They literally get to walk in the footsteps of their Lord as they follow Via Dolorosa, the path along which Jesus Christ carried the cross. Visiting Jerusalem can be very sobering and emotional.

One day, New Jerusalem will appear, fulfilling the prophesy. For now, visitors to the Holy Land get to enjoy seeing the Old City of Jerusalem first-hand. This part of the Jerusalem was in existence in biblical times. The Old City of Jerusalem, surrounded by its famous walls it stands as a real life testimony of the historical foundation of the Christian and Jewish religions. Those who go there can see what life was like back in biblical days and where many stories in the Bible took place. Visiting this area can experience the words of the Bible come to life. They get a taste of what life was really like back then and they get to ponder what New Jerusalem will be like.

The Old City of Jerusalem’s layout still shows the influence of the Roman Empire, who attempted to build a new city on top of it. The streets follow the pattern of the ancient Roman designs. Of great significance in the Old City of Jerusalem is the Temple Mount. This is a place of great significance that has drawn droves of devout praying worshippers throughout history. Jerusalem is a city that is beloved in the hearts of millions of people. Every believer should have the opportunity to visit there and hope that one day they will get to see New Jerusalem as well.

He did not want the Roman Catholics to use Jerome’s Latin Vulgate. As a result the Jerusalem Bible was produced by translating the scriptures from Hebrew and Greek. While Pope Pius XII had originally communicated his preferences in 1943 by issuing an encyclical letter, it was not until 1956 that the completed Jerusalem Bible was published. The first edition was written in French and called La Bible de Jérusalem. It was produced by Dominicans and some other scholars at École Biblique, a French academic institution of great notoriety that was founded in Jerusalem in 1890.

In 1966, this French translation of the Bible was used to make an English version or The New Jerusalem Bible . Particularly, a small number of the Old Testament books were translated from French. However, many of the books in the English translation of the Jerusalem Bible were translated directly from the original Hebrew and Greek. Before the English version of the Jerusalem Bible was published, the General Editor revised it by performing a word-for-word comparison of the English version to the original Hebrew. Yet, the introduction and the footnotes featured in the English version of the Jerusalem Bible are almost the exact translations of those found in the French version. Since the Jerusalem Bible was translated directly from the Hebrew and Greek it is often considered to be more accurate and is regarded as a higher authority. For this reason, many people prefer the Jerusalem Bible and feel like they get a better understanding of the scriptures from this version.

One of the best known songs about Jerusalem is the Jerusalem Hymn. This song is poetic, flowing and beautiful. It touches the heart and was designed to express many beliefs, ideas and sentiments about God and the city of Jerusalem. However, there has been some controversy about it among churches. It has been banned nay some fro being too patriotic. Instead, it has been played at sporting events in UK and even at royal weddings. This song also is a song of patriotism. It was designed to honor England. The verses of the hymn speak of New Jerusalem, when it comes, being placed in the land of England. By this the author is expressing how they feel that England is a blessed land and a land that will be blessed.

The very fact that the author of the Jerusalem Hymn felt it a blessing for the holy city of New Jerusalem, should come to the land, demonstrates a love of God. Any such devotion comes only from those who believe in God. Clearly the author shows his position on the existence of God. The Jerusalem Hymn serves, therefore to tell others that God should be believed in, trusted, honored and desired. Choosing England to be the place where New Jerusalem should be placed shows that the author appreciated it. If indeed England would be chosen to be the place of the city which descended from heaven it would be granted eternal life and remain as a choice destination forever.

There are many other things yet to be revealed about the Jerusalem Hymn. This song has been around for a long time and has been just as long appreciated. To hear it sung by a choir live really helps to bring out its beauty. Its inspiring lyrics help to motivate and strengthen the soul. The feeling of patriotism begins to flow whenever the song is played. Even if a person is not affiliated with England, they can relate and enjoy the song. The Jerusalem Hymn was written to touch the heart and it has screed to do exactly that. Its effect on people is one of the reasons why it has stayed around for so long.

The City of David is the oldest settled neighborhood in Jerusalem as we know it. Archeological evidence takes it back to the Bronze Age. King David captured the city from the Jebusites circa 1000 BCE, established Jerusalem as his capital and built his temple there. The city is bordered by the Hinnom Valley to the south and the Kidron Valley on the east - Click here to view the map

According to the Bible, King Solomon was chosen to build the First Temple because – unlike his father – his hands were not stained with the blood of his enemies, thus he was not precluded from building a temple to God - Click here to view the map

It is today marked by nine Stations of the Cross; there have been fourteen stations since the late 15th century, with the remaining five stations being inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The route is a place of Christian pilgrimage. The Via Dolorosa is considered to be one of the most ancient spiritual walking routes for Christians the world over - Click here to view the map
