Today we are visiting the Grotto of Gethsemane Jerusalem, at the foothill of the Mount of Olives, where Jesus and his disciples retired for the night after the Passover meal – the last Super. This Grotto also called the Grotto of the Betrayal.

The Grotto Gethsemane is located at the bottom of the Mount of Olives and the access to it, is along a narrow walled passageway leading to the right from the open courtyard in front of the Tomb of Mary.  This place is also called the Grotto of the Betrayal since here Judas Iscariot pointed Jesus out to the arresting roman soldiers by kissing him.

From all the holy sites in Jerusalem, the Grotto of Gethsemane Jerusalem, is considered to be at its best original appearance, that is, the appearance it had at the time of Christ’s life on earth. One evident that this Grotto was existing at the time of Jesus is this Water Cistern which is even before Christ era.

During the 4th century, the Grotto Gethsemane become a chapel and its served as a chapel till today.

Here over the main altar is a picture of Jesus Praying among the Apostles and beneath it there are two bronze figures depicting the two sleeping disciples while Jesus was praying to his father on the night before his crucifixion. To the right, is a picture depicting the kiss of Judas and to the left is a picture depicting the Assumption of Mary, mother of Jesus.

Feast at the Grotto of Gethsemane:

Every year during the celebration of the Assumption of Mary to heaven, the Franciscan friars conduct on the ceremonies right here inside this Grotto.
