Today we are going to walk along one of the most ancient spiritual walking routes for Christians – The Via Dolorosa Jerusalem (Latin for “the Way of Grief”) – which is the path taken by Jesus in his final hours, also known as the Passion.

Every day, Christians from all over the world flock to Jerusalem to walk the Via Dolorosa Jerusalem Stations and pray at each Station of the Cross in order to experience what it might have been like when Jesus carried his cross to the site of the crucifixion. Some of them actually carry a wooden cross.

Since Christianity was established as a formal religion some 300 years after the events of the Via Dolorosa took place, you can only imagine how many debates and changes there have been surrounding the actual stations and the route of the Via Dolorosa Jerusalem.
Today, the Via Dolorosa consists of 14 stations.
• I – Jesus is put on Trial and condemned to death.
• II – the church of the Flagellation and the church of the Condemnation and Imposition of the Cross.
• III – Jesus falls for the first time
• IV – Jesus meets his mother for the first time.
• V – Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross.
• VI – Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.
• VII – Jesus falls for the second time.
• VIII – Jesus Meets the women of Jerusalem
• IX – Jesus falls for the third time.
• X – Jesus is stripped of this garments
• XI – Jesus nailed to the Cross.
• XII – Jesus dies on the Cross
• XII – Jesus body placed in his mother’s arms.
• XIV – The Sepulchre of Christ
It was only at the 14th century, that Pope Clement the VI achieved some consistency in the route by establishing the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land and entrusting the friars with the ritual of the Catholic shrines, but only in the 19th century the 14 Stations of the Cross as we know them today were proclaimed. By the way, even today, each Friday the Franciscan friars conduct the ritual of “the way of the Cross” by walking the route of the Via Dolorosa here in Jerusalem.
It is interesting to note that in many Roman Catholic and other churches all over the world, there are symbols of the stations so that devoted Christians can walk the spiritual path and pray at each station in order to identify with Jesus’ passion during his last hours on earth.
Moreover, in the Roman Catholic Church, Pope John Paul the II, used to lead, on every Good Friday, an annual public prayer of the Stations of the Cross, at the Roman Coliseum.

I was sad to read that Ms. White thought so ltitle of the vast and beautiful images of Jesus. For God Himself broke the commandment she used to rebuke by the order to Moses to set up an image of a serpent and Christ Himself is the Image of God on earth. Col 1:15. Worship of an image is a matter of the heart, I am not so shallow a person to confuse an image with the worship of the One Holy God Peace in JesusFr. Travis FrankSt. John’s Episcopal
