Palm Sunday Jerusalem

Palm Sunday Jerusalem marks  the day of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem riding a white Donkey and followed by people as they are waving palm branches and covering his path with  their cloaks and palm branches in front of him, thus the name Palm Sunday.

he Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches.

In the accounts of the four canonical Gospels, Palm Sunday Jerusalem takes place on Sunday a week before Jesus Resurrection.

The symbolism of Palm Sunday is captured in the book of Zechariah 9:9 “The Coming of Zion’s King – See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey”.

One explanation of the crowds seeking Jesus during Palm Sunday Jerusalem is within the Miracle of Lazarus raising from the dead which Jesus perform also here on top of Mount Olives at the biblical village of Bethany where it is today al-Eizariya – the place where many christian believe it is the Tomb of Lazarus.

This Video start with a Morning Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre where you can see priest and people holding and waiving Palm branches as a symbol to Jesus’ Triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

From there we shall join the procession of Palm Sunday Jerusalem which starts at the Church of Bethpage on top of Mount Olives. Inside the church  there is a stone traditionally identified as the one which Jesus used to mount the donkey at the start of his procession into Jerusalem. The stone is set apart by a wrought iron railing and it is decorated with drawing on each side of it.

The drawing depict several events related to Palm Sunday:

– The meeting between Jesus and Martha

– Two disciples bringing Jesus an ass and a colt,

– Lazarus rising from the dead,

– A crowd of people holding palms.

Behind the altar of the Church there is a fresco depicting Jesus riding a donkey to the Jerusalem Temple, accompanied by his disciples.

From the Church of Bethphage, the procession start all the way to the Lions’ Gate at the eastern wall of the Old City of Jerusalem. The Procession also pass near several important churches on Mount of Olives:

1. Dominus Flevit Church – where Jesus stopped during the procession and wept (The Lord Wept) over the future destruction Jerusalem

2. Church of Mary Magdalene – a Russian Orthodox Church in the name of Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus closest disciple.

3. Church of All Nations – where Jesus spent the night before his crucifixion (The Agony in the Garden).

The end of the Palm Sunday procession is at the Saint Anne Chuch, the place where Mary, mother of Jesus was born to Anne and Joachim.

I hope you enjoyed my video of Palm Sunday Jerusalem. Thant’s it for today and until we meet in my next video, Let’s All Live the Jerusalem Experience!
